The AACA Motorcycle Award is presented for outstanding restoration of a motorcycle shown at a national meet.
๐ 1939 Matchless Model X โ Mark & Hilary Becker, Jacksonville, Florida
Mark and Hilary have owned this very rare Matchless for just two years, having found it in England wearing an older restoration. It is now only the second one known to be in the United States. Mark set about doing his own work both mechanically and cosmetically to get it into show-worthy condition. The Model X could reach 70mph in the standing quarter-mile and had a top speed of about 80mph. It originally sold for 70 quid โ the equivalent of $88. A modified Matchless X engine was also used in the legendary Brough-Superior SS80.

๐ 1952 Allstate Deluxe Model 811.40 โ Mark Serfass, Douglassville, Pennsylvania
Mark`s father purchased this scooter at Hershey in 1995 โ a duplicate of the one he owned when he was 19 years old in 1952. Mark and his dad completed the entire restoration together, with Mark handling cosmetics and his dad the mechanicals. His dad rode the scooter right up until his death at age 92 last March. The Allstate Scooter model 811.40 was sold through the Sears-Roebuck catalog and was a collaboration between Sears and the renowned manufacturer Cushman โ a downgraded version produced to reduce cost, and also to reduce competition with Cushman`s own scooters.

The Bomgardner Award recognizes outstanding restoration of a post-1942 vehicle. This year`s two winners:
๐ Central โ 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, Gene Wall, Richmond, Texas
Gene first spotted this car in a repair shop receiving minor clutch work, and it had already been authenticated as having its original drivetrain. Finished in Garnet Red with Tuxedo Black rally stripes, it`s equipped with the 302cid/290hp V-8 and Muncie 4-speed โ though actual output was closer to 375hp.
๐ Eastern โ 1979 Mercedes-Benz 6.9 450 SEL, Guy Lewis, Pinecrest, Florida
Only 1,816 were built, all by hand. The 6.9`s powerful 286hp engine could pull it from 0โ60 in seven seconds and reach 150mph โ earning it the nickname "Banker`s Hot Rod," as it was faster than a Porsche 911. It was the first production passenger car with standard antilock brakes. List price: ~$55,000, equal to about $300,000 today.
Full stories in the March/April 2026 issue of Antique Automobile.
